Difference between propane and natural gas
The main difference between propane and natural gas is that propane is a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) while natural gas is a methane gas. Propane is stored in pressurized tanks and must be converted to gas before it can be used, while natural gas comes directly from the ground and does not need to be converted.
Propane is a great fuel source for grilling because it is easy to store and transport. However, natural gas is a cheaper and more environmentally friendly option. If you have access to a natural gas line, we recommend making the switch!
Benefits of Converting Propane to Natural Gas Grill
There are several benefits of converting your propane grill to a natural gas grill. The most obvious benefit is that you will no longer need to purchase and store propane tanks. This can be a hassle, especially if you live in an area where propane is not easily accessible. By converting your grill from propane to natural gas, you eliminate this hassle.
Another benefit is that natural gas grills typically have a higher heat output than propane grills, so you can cook your food faster. Natural gas is also cleaner burning than propane, so it’s better for the environment.

Finally, it will save money in the long run. The price of propane has been rising steadily over the past few years, while the price of natural gas has remained relatively stable. So, by switching to a natural gas grill, you can save money on your fuel costs. If you are a regular griller like me, you will quickly recoup the cost of the conversion kit pretty fast.
Tools Needed
To convert your grill from propane to natural gas, you will need a few tools.
Conversion Kit
A conversion kit is the most critical piece of equipment you’ll need to convert your propane barbecue to natural gas. Your propane grill may be connected to your natural gas line using this hose, which has brass fittings on either end. It’s important to note that the manifold fitting for your grill will be manufacturer-specific, so make sure you get the right one.
Adjustable Wrench
You will need a crescent wrench to loosen and remove the old propane regulator. Although most kits come with a wrench included, they are usually not the best quality. Save yourself some busted knuckles and get a good adjustable wrench.
Pipe Wrench
You will need a pipe wrench to loosen the old propane supply line from the grill. Again, although most kits come with a wrench included, they are usually not the best quality. Get a good pipe wrench to avoid any frustration.
Teflon Tape
Depending on the propane to natural gas conversion kit you select, you may need teflon tape to seal the connections. On the natural gas conversion kit I used, the tape was supplied. If you do need teflon tape, make sure you get teflon tape that is rated for natural gas.
Pre-Check Before Converting Your Grill From Propane to Natural Gas
It is important to check the gas pressure before converting. The average natural gas pressure in residential homes is between 7-14″ w.c. (water column). Most grills require at least 10″ w.c. to function properly, so you will need to check your home’s natural gas pressure to ensure it is not too low or too high.
Other great tips, How To Thicken Sauce
You can check the pressure using a natural gas manifold pressure test kit like the one below.
Measureman Natural Gas or LP Gas Manifold Pressure Test Kit
If you are not comfortable doing this test, call your local gas supplier or natural gas installer.
The next step is to confirm with your local plumbing inspector whether flexible gas hoses are permitted. There are some inspectors who insist on a more permanent setup.
A word of caution: the Internet’s “jet-drilling” instructions are false. It’s a bad idea all around. It will likely destroy your grill, and you could cause an explosion. This is a serious issue that can injure or kill people.
The other problem with following the “jet-drilling” instructions is that it can permanently damage your grates. If a conversion kit is not available for your grill do not attempt to drill jets yourself. The best practice is to always have a professional convert your grill from propane to natural gas.
Natural Gas Conversion Kit Installation – 4 Step Instructions
Now that you have all of the tools you need, it’s time to get started
Disconnect Propane Tank
Shut off the gas at the propane tank and disconnect the hose from the grill.
Natural Gas Conversion: Swap the jets
The jet wrench that comes with the conversion kit can be used to remove the old jets (or a socket on an extension bar). After that, put in the appropriate grill-specific jets.
Removal of Valve Knob
Pull the valve knob straight off with your fingers. Applying the limiter stop is the final step. Press the knob into place to reinstall it. I switched from a propane to a natural gas barbecue and haven’t looked back since.
Buy and Install Conversion Kit
The specific instructions from this point will require you to follow the directions that come with your particular natural gas conversion kit. In general, you will be attaching the hose from the grill to the manifold on the conversion kit. The other end of the hose will attach to your home’s natural gas line.

Now is a good time to mention that if you are not comfortable, you can always have a professional install your natural gas conversion kit. If you decide to do it yourself, just be sure to take all of the necessary safety precautions.
After the installation is complete, it’s time to test your grill. Turn on the gas at the manifold and light the grill according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If everything goes according to plan, you should now have a fully functioning natural gas grill!
Company Specific Natural Gas Conversion Kits
After doing a lot of research and using some of these on my grills in the past, here are my recommendations for the best natural gas conversion kits for converting propane to natural gas on your grill.
Char Broil Natural Gas Conversion Kit
Char-Broil 4984619A Natural Gas Conversion Kit
I did this Char-Broil gas conversion kit for a friend last year and it was an easy job with the kit. The kit comes with almost everything needed. When doing the install, I purchased a 3/8″ to 1/2″ adapter from Amazon as the included kit orifice was 3/8 vs the 1/2″ orifice on the grill. The only other item needed was teflon tape, which I had on hand.
More grilling tips, How to Store Charcoal
The installation is pretty simple and straightforward. The hardest part for me was getting the old jets out, but that was due to years of grilling with propane building up corrosion. Overall it took about 30 minutes to do the entire install once I had all the parts.
I would definitely recommend this kit if you’re looking for a quality product to do the job right. Just make sure your grill is compatible and you choose the kit for the correct year.
Embers Propane to Natural Gas Kit
I have not had the chance to install this one as the only person I know with an Embers grill was worried it would ruin the inventory. I did some research with them and this kit looks to be exactly what you would need to convert either the Embers GAS7480AS or Embers GAS7480BS models from propane to natural gas.
Blackstone Natural Gas Kit
Blackstone Propane to Natural Gas Conversion Kit
The Blackstone natural gas kit is pretty much the same as the Char-Broil kit. I have not used it but a friend did and he had no issues. The only thing he mentioned was that you need to have Teflon tape on hand as it is not included in the kit.
Nexgrill Natural Gas Conversion Kit
Nexgrill makes probably the highest quality conversion kit that I have seen in regards to the quality of the hose and fittings. Of course, the price also reflect this as it is a bit more expensive than the others. That being said, if you have a Nexgrill grill, this is the kit you want to get.
Camp Chef Natural Gas Conversion Kit
GASPRO 3/8-Inch Propane to Natural Gas Conversion
I have used this universal kit in place of the Camp Chef manufactured kit with great results. It has the same 3/8″ connections that the Camp Chef kit uses, but the hose is much longer. That being said, it does not come with an adapter to use a 1/2″ connection, so if your grill has that, you will need to purchase one separately.
DIY Converting Propane to Natural Gas Grill
DOZYANT 36 Feet 3/8 inch Natural Gas Hose with Quick Connect for BBQ Grill
If your specific grill does not offer a conversion kit, you may be able to use one of the universal conversion kits like the one above. In addition, pick up some jet adapters to get the sizing right. This is a bit more of an advanced project, so if you’re not comfortable working with gas lines, I would recommend having a professional do it for you.
Pit Boss Gas Conversion Kit
Unfortunately like many manufactures, a Pit Boss gas conversion kit does not exist that is manufactured by Pit Boss. To convert Pit Boss to a natural gas grill you would need to have a professional drill the jets based upon your specific model. Again, do not do this yourself regardless of what the internet tells you. It is not worth the potential risks.
If you go with this route, there is a gas orifice capacity chart that can be used here.
You should note a conversion will void your warranty, but if you have an older grill this could be a good option.
Weber Natural Gas Conversion Kit
Like the Pit Boss, Weber does not offer an official Weber natural gas conversion kit. Weber advises against it and says that attempting it will void your guarantee if it damages your grill.
Conclusion
I hope this guide was helpful in deciding which natural gas conversion kit is right for you. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below and I’ll do my best to answer them.
Happy grilling!
